Large-Leaved Bamboo (Narrow Form) 'Hamadae'
'Hamadae' is a distinct form of the Large-Leaved Bamboo, grown specifically for its incredibly oversized foliage which can reach up to 45cm long and 10cm wide. These are the largest leaves of any bamboo hardy in the UK, giving it a truly prehistoric and tropical appearance. The plant has a low, spreading habit, rarely exceeding 1.5 to 2 metres in height, with the heavy leaves often causing the slender canes to arch gracefully to the ground. It is exceptionally useful for creating a dense, exotic-looking groundcover or a low, lush screen. It is surprisingly hardy (H5) and very shade-tolerant, making it perfect for underplanting large trees or brightening dark corners of the garden. It is a running bamboo but is relatively slow-moving in cooler UK soils. To keep the foliage looking its best, it should be protected from strong winds which can shred the large leaves. It loves moisture and thrives in rich, boggy soils.
