Indocalamus tessellatus 'Hamada'
Indocalamus tessellatus 'Hamada' is a distinctive dwarf running bamboo cultivar, highly valued for its exceptionally large, glossy, dark green leaves, which are among the largest of any hardy bamboo. These impressive leaves (up to 60cm long) give it a bold, tropical appearance and make it an excellent choice for ground cover in UK gardens. This bamboo typically grows to an ultimate height of 1-1.5 metres with a vigorous spreading habit, necessitating a rhizome barrier to prevent uncontrolled spread. It is hardy in the UK, rated H5, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C. 'Hamada' thrives in partial to full shade, which helps prevent leaf scorch, and prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Flowering is rare. Its unique, bold foliage provides strong textural contrast and year-round interest, especially in woodland settings.
