Herklots's Bamboo
Indocalamus herklotsii is an excellent choice for UK gardeners looking for a bold, large-leaved bamboo that remains relatively low. It typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 metres and features enormous, broad leaves that can be up to 30cm long. These leaves are a lush, deep green and have a slightly reflective quality, making them stand out in shady parts of the garden. The plant has a somewhat spreading, shrubby habit and is perfect for creating an exotic groundcover or a low, dense hedge. It is remarkably shade tolerant and is one of the few bamboos that will truly thrive in a north-facing site or under a canopy of trees. It is fully hardy (H5) and very easy to manage. While it is a running bamboo, its spread is much slower and more controllable than other members of the Indocalamus genus. It is also surprisingly wind-resistant for a large-leaved plant. It requires moist, fertile soil and benefits from a layer of organic mulch once a year.
Sun: Partial shade to full shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained loam.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
