Holly 'Pyramidalis'
Ilex aquifolium 'Pyramidalis' is a distinctive cultivar of the native English Holly that is prized for its naturally conical and upright growth habit. This makes it an excellent choice for a structured, tall hedge or an architectural focal point in a formal garden. The leaves are a deep, glossy green and, interestingly, are almost entirely without the sharp spines usually associated with holly, making it more pleasant to prune. This cultivar is self-fertile, meaning it will produce a reliable crop of bright red berries in autumn and winter even if there isn't another holly nearby, providing a vital food source for winter birds. It is exceptionally hardy (H6) and can grow in awide range of conditions, from full sun to deep shade, and in most soil types. It is slow-growing but long-lived, and a well-maintained Pyramidalis hedge can become a magnificent and permanent feature of any UK garden. Regular pruning in late summer will keep it neat.
Sun: Full sun to full shade.
Soil: Any well-drained soil.
