Climbing Hydrangea 'Silver Lining'

'Silver Lining' is a contemporary and highly decorative cultivar of the climbing hydrangea. It is grown primarily for its stunning variegated foliage; the heart-shaped leaves have a striking, irregular silvery-white margin that brightens up shaded areas of the garden. In summer, it produces lacecap-style clusters of creamy-white flowers, though these are sometimes less prolific than on the standard green-leaved species. In the UK, this is an excellent choice for a north-facing wall or a shaded fence, as it is one of the few climbers that performs well in full shade. It is self-clinging, using aerial roots to attach itself to surfaces, though it is slow to establish for the first few years. Once it takes hold, it becomes a vigorous and reliable plant. It is fully hardy and deciduous, with its autumn leaves turning a butter-yellow before falling. It requires little pruning other than to keep it within its boundaries, which should be done in spring. It adds a sophisticated, light-filled texture to vertical garden spaces.
