Spanish Bluebell
Hyacinthoides hispanica, the Spanish bluebell, is a robust and vigorous bulbous plant, often seen naturalised in UK woodlands and gardens. It produces taller, more erect spikes of bell-shaped flowers in shades of blue, pink, or white, typically blooming in late spring. Unlike the native English bluebell, its flowers are more open and borne all around the stem, with broader leaves. Fully hardy and adaptable, it thrives in most well-drained soils in partial shade, but can also tolerate full sun. It naturalises readily, forming impressive carpets of colour, though care should be taken to prevent it from outcompeting native species in sensitive areas.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
