Sea Buckthorn Bird Bird Bird Bird Bird 'Leikora'
A robust and highly ornamental deciduous shrub that is exceptionally well-adapted to coastal and exposed locations in the UK. 'Leikora' is a female cultivar prized for its heavy crops of bright orange berries which persist through the winter, providing a stunning visual display and a feast for birds. The foliage is narrow and silvery-grey, resembling that of a willow, and provides a beautiful contrast to the berries. It has a thorny, suckering habit, which makes it an outstanding choice for an impenetrable, wind-breaking hedge. It is incredibly tough, salt-tolerant, and can grow in very poor, sandy soils, including those on sand dunes. It is also a nitrogen-fixing plant, which helps it to thrive in nutrient-poor conditions. Note that a male plant is required nearby (such as 'Pollmix') to ensure fruit production on 'Leikora'. It should be planted in full sun to ensure the best berry crop and healthy growth. It requires minimal maintenance but can be pruned to shape in late winter.
