Rough-Hulled Bamboo
This is an elegant and rare clumping bamboo from the foothills of the Himalayas, suitable for milder UK gardens or sheltered coastal sites. It is distinctive for the 'rough' texture of its young culms, which are often covered in a fine, dark bristly fur that disappears as they mature to a beautiful grey-green. The leaves are small, neat, and very numerous, giving the plant a soft, feathery appearance. It forms a tight, non-invasive clump and has a gracefully arching habit. While it is only moderately hardy (H3-H4), it is a stunning choice for a Mediterranean-style garden or a sheltered city courtyard in the south of the UK. It must be protected from freezing winds and heavy frosts, which can cause significant die-back. It thrives in rich, consistently moist but well-drained soil. It is particularly beautiful when backlit by the sun, which highlights its fine foliage and the delicate structure of its branching.
