Rose of Sharon sugar tip 'Sugar Tip'
Hibiscus syriacus 'Sugar Tip' (Lwood1) is a truly unique deciduous hedging plant that offers both striking foliage and beautiful late-season flowers. Unlike standard Hibiscus, this cultivar features variegated, bluish-green leaves with irregular creamy-white margins that remain attractive from spring through autumn. In late summer, when many other shrubs are fading, it produces a profusion of delicate, double, pale pink flowers. 'Sugar Tip' has a refined, upright, and bushy habit, making it suitable for a medium-sized informal flowering hedge. It is notably sterile, meaning it won't drop seeds and create unwanted seedlings in the garden. This plant thrives in a warm, sunny, and sheltered position in the UK to ensure the wood ripens and produces plenty of flowers. While it is fully hardy, it starts into growth late in the spring. Minimal pruning is required, usually just a light tidy-up in early spring to maintain its structural form.
