Coral Bells 'Obsidian'
For gardeners seeking a truly dark, dramatic ground cover, Heuchera 'Obsidian' is unsurpassed. It produces mounds of incredibly glossy, smooth-textured leaves that are a deep, consistent near-black colour. Unlike some other dark varieties, its colour does not fade or 'green out' during the summer, remaining intense throughout the year. The evergreen foliage provides a sophisticated backdrop for other plants and is particularly effective when contrasted with bright greens or chartreuse yellows. In early summer, it produces dainty spikes of small, cream-colored flowers, though these are secondary to its foliage interest. It is fully hardy and performs best in partial shade, as the dark leaves can occasionally scorch in the harshest afternoon sun. It requires a well-drained soil and benefits from being lifted and replanted every few years to prevent the woody 'stem' from becoming too prominent. A perfect choice for contemporary or woodland gardens.
