Kaffir Lily 'Major'

Schizostylis coccinea 'Major', often called Kaffir Lily or River Lily, is a delightful late-flowering perennial bringing vibrant colour to UK gardens when many others fade. This semi-evergreen plant produces grass-like foliage and, from late summer through autumn, sends up elegant spikes of star-shaped, rich salmon-pink to red flowers. Growing to about 40-60cm tall, it thrives in a sheltered position in partial shade and prefers moist to wet, humus-rich soil, especially along pond edges or in bog gardens. It is reasonably hardy (H4) but benefits from a mulch in colder areas. 'Major' is a robust cultivar, providing a welcome splash of warm colour, attracting late pollinators, and extending the gardening season.
