English Ivy 'Buttercup'
Hedera helix 'Buttercup' is one of the most cheerful ivy varieties available to the UK gardener. This evergreen climber is distinguished by its stunning bright yellow leaves, which are most vibrant when the plant is grown in a sunny position. In the shade, the foliage tends to turn a more subtle lime-green. It is a self-clinging climber that uses aerial roots to attach itself to walls, fences, or tree trunks, making it an excellent choice for year-round vertical interest. It is extremely hardy and resilient, tolerating a wide range of soil conditions and urban pollution. While it is slower-growing than the common green ivy, it still provides dense cover and excellent nesting sites for birds. It is also an important late-season nectar source for insects when its mature stems produce small, greenish-yellow flowers followed by black berries. To keep the golden colour at its peak, ensure it is not crowded out by more vigorous, darker-leaved plants. It is easily maintained with a yearly trim in spring.
