Persian Ivy 'Sulphur Heart'
Also known as 'Paddy's Pride', Hedera colchica 'Sulphur Heart' is one of the most striking and large-leaved ivies available for UK gardens. As a ground cover, it is incredibly effective, creating a dense, evergreen carpet that can quickly cover large areas of bare earth or climb over stumps and walls. The leaves are huge, leathery, and heart-shaped, featuring a bold, irregular splash of sulphur-yellow and lime-green in the centre, which fades to a deep green at the margins. This variegation is excellent for brightening up dark, shaded corners where little else will thrive. It is extremely hardy (H5) and vigorous, but generally less invasive than the common ivy. It is tolerant of most soil types, including heavy clay, and is remarkably drought-resistant once established. While it will grow in full sun, its best leaf colour and size are usually achieved in partial shade. It provides invaluable shelter for garden wildlife throughout the year. 168 words.
