Algerian Ivy 'Gloire de Marengo'

This is one of the most decorative large-leaved ivies available for UK gardens. 'Gloire de Marengo' features striking, leathery, heart-shaped leaves that are a deep grey-green with irregular, creamy-white margins. The variegation provides excellent year-round interest and can help brighten up a dark or north-facing wall. As a self-clinging climber using aerial roots, it requires little assistance once established, though some initial training may be needed. It is slightly less hardy than the common English ivy (Hedera helix), so it prefers a somewhat sheltered spot, particularly in colder northern regions of the UK. It is relatively fast-growing and can cover large areas effectively. In autumn, mature plants produce greenish-yellow flowers followed by black berries, which are an important food source for birds. It is very tolerant of urban pollution and can also be used as excellent groundcover under large trees.
