Hebe Pagei 'Pagei'
This is an exceptional evergreen dwarf shrub that provides excellent ground cover for rock gardens, coastal locations, and the front of sunny borders. Hebe pinguifolia 'Pagei' is native to New Zealand but has become a staple of British horticulture due to its resilience and attractive year-round appearance. It forms a prostrate, spreading mound of small, fleshy, glaucous blue-grey leaves that contrast beautifully with greener garden plants. In May and June, it produces numerous short spikes of dainty white flowers that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. It is remarkably tough, holding an RHS Award of Garden Merit, and is resistant to salt spray, making it ideal for seaside gardens. It thrives in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil and requires minimal pruning—only a light trim after flowering to maintain its neat, hummocky shape. It is fully hardy across most of the UK (H4) and copes well with drought once established.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained neutral to alkaline soil.
Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.
