Limestone Fern
Gymnocarpium robertianum, the Limestone Fern, is a delicate and often overlooked deciduous fern, closely related to the Oak Fern but preferring different soil conditions. It produces finely cut, grey-green, triangular fronds that are somewhat covered in glandular hairs. It typically reaches 15-30cm in height and spreads slowly by rhizomes. H6 hardy, it distinguishes itself by thriving in partial shade and well-drained, alkaline, rocky soil, often found growing in limestone crevices. A specialist fern for a specific niche in a shady rock garden.
