Variegated New Zealand Privet 'Variegata'

Griselinia littoralis 'Variegata' is a popular choice for coastal hedging in the UK, prized for its bright, cheerful appearance and exceptional tolerance to salt-laden winds. This evergreen shrub features apple-green, leathery leaves with an irregular creamy-white margin, creating a luminous effect in the garden. It has a naturally upright and bushy habit, allowing it to form a dense screen quickly. While it is ideal for seaside locations, it also grows well inland, provided it is in a sheltered spot away from harsh, freezing winds, as it is moderately hardy (H4). It prefers a well-drained soil and will grow in full sun or light shade, though the variegation is most prominent in brighter light. In spring, it produces inconspicuous yellow-green flowers. It can be easily maintained at heights between 1.5 and 3 metres with a regular prune in late spring or early autumn to keep its shape.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained soil.

Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.

Flowering: May.
