Royal Grevillea

Although of Australian origin, this species is a frequent component of Mediterranean-themed gardens in the UK due to its silver-toned foliage and exotic look. It is an evergreen shrub with lance-shaped, leathery leaves that are dark green above and silvery-white underneath. What makes it truly special is its flowering period; it produces clusters of pendant, rusty-red or orange flowers from autumn through to spring, providing vital nectar for overwintering insects in milder areas. Grevillea victoriae is one of the hardiest Grevilleas, rated H4, and can withstand temperatures down to -10°C if the soil is well-drained. It must be grown in lime-free soil, as it is strictly ericaceous. A sunny, sheltered position is vital to protect the blooms from frost damage. It requires very little pruning and is remarkably drought-tolerant once established. It adds a unique, architectural element to a sheltered garden or a large conservatory pot.
