Spider Flower' 'Canberra Gem'
This striking evergreen shrub brings a touch of the exotic to Mediterranean-themed gardens. 'Canberra Gem' is one of the hardier Grevilleas for the UK (rated H3/H4), forming a dense, arching mound of needle-like, bright green foliage. From late winter sporadically through to summer, it produces clusters of unusual, waxy, spider-like flowers in a vibrant rose-pink. The flowers are rich in nectar and are a magnet for bees during the early months of the year. In the UK, it must have acidic to neutral soil that is very well-drained; it will not tolerate lime or heavy clay. A sheltered, south-facing position against a wall is ideal to protect it from the worst of the winter frost. It requires very little maintenance and is generally pest and disease-free. Because of its needle-like foliage, it is also quite resistant to deer and rabbits, making it practical for rural Mediterranean-style landscapes.
