Chihuahua Flower
Widely considered to have the most beautiful flowers in the entire Crassulaceae family, Graptopetalum bellum (formerly Tacitus bellus) is a stunning rosette-forming succulent. The rosettes are flat and compact, consisting of dull grey-green, triangular leaves. The real draw, however, is the spectacular display of large, star-shaped, vibrant deep pink or magenta flowers that appear in early summer. The flowers are much larger than those of most related succulents and are held in clusters just above the foliage. In the UK, this plant is generally grown as a houseplant or in a conservatory (H2), as it is sensitive to frost and excess moisture. It prefers a very well-drained potting medium and bright but filtered light to prevent scorching. Watering should be done carefully, avoiding the centre of the rosette to prevent rot. It is a slow-growing but immensely rewarding plant for the succulent connoisseur.
