Great Water Grass 'Variegata'

Glyceria maxima 'Variegata' is a striking ornamental grass specifically suited for the margins of larger ponds and water gardens. Known for its beautiful, cream and green striped longitudinal foliage, the young spring growth often emerges with a charming pinkish flush. This deciduous perennial forms a dense, creeping mat of rhizomes that are excellent for stabilizing pond banks, though its vigorous nature means it is best suited to larger spaces or contained within sturdy planting baskets. The flower panicles appear in mid-summer, though they are less significant than the decorative foliage. It is fully hardy in the UK (H7) and performs best in full sun, which intensifies the variegation. It can grow in wet mud or in shallow water up to 15cm deep. It provides excellent nesting sites for waterfowl and cover for amphibians at the water's edge.
