Flame Lily 'Rothschildiana'

A breathtakingly exotic tuberous climber that adds a tropical touch to UK gardens. 'Rothschildiana' features large, dramatic flowers with reflexed petals that are bright crimson-red edged with yellow. The leaves have tendrils at the tips, which the plant uses to scramble up supports. In the UK, it is most successfully grown in a conservatory or greenhouse, but it can be placed outside on a warm, sheltered patio during the height of summer. The tubers are uniquely L-shaped and must be handled with care as all parts of the plant are highly toxic. Plant them horizontally about 8-10cm deep in rich, well-draining compost. They require plenty of warmth and humidity to start into growth. Once the foliage dies back in autumn, the tubers must be kept completely dry and frost-free over the winter. It is a high-maintenance plant but rewarded by some of the most spectacular flowers in the botanical world.
