Leafless-stemmed Globularia
A fascinating and distinct alpine from the mountains of Central and Southern Europe. Globularia nudicaulis forms a dense mat of dark green, leathery, spoon-shaped leaves that remain evergreen throughout the year. In early summer, it produces leafless stems (hence the name 'nudicaulis') topped with singular, fluffy, spherical flower heads of a clear, soft blue. These 'drumstick' flowers are highly unusual and provide a lovely contrast to more traditional flower shapes in the rock garden. In the UK, it is a hardy and reliable performer (H7), thriving in well-drained, lime-rich soils. It prefers a position in full sun but can tolerate very light shade. It is an excellent choice for a rockery or a trough where its interesting foliage and unique flowers can be appreciated. It is generally pest and disease-free and requires very little maintenance, though it can be slow-growing. Its subtle beauty makes it a favourite among alpine collectors and enthusiasts.
