Heart-leaved Globularia
Globularia cordifolia is a fascinating, low-growing, evergreen sub-shrub that forms a dense, woody carpet of dark green, heart-shaped leaves. This native of the European mountains is remarkably resilient and well-adapted to the UK rock garden. In early to mid-summer, it produces unique and charming fluffy, globe-shaped flower heads that are a wonderful shade of powdery, lavender-blue. These globes are held just above the foliage on short stems and provide a very different texture compared to the more common cup-shaped alpine flowers. It is an excellent choice for growing over rocks, as its woody stems will slowly hug the contours of the stone. It requires a very well-drained soil, ideally one that is somewhat alkaline, and a position in full sun to flower well. It is a slow grower, making it ideal for the smaller rockery or for use in a trough where it won't overwhelm its neighbours. Its evergreen nature ensures it provides structural interest even during the winter months.
