Honey Locust 'Sunburst'

'Sunburst' is a popular ornamental tree valued for its light, airy canopy and vibrant foliage. In spring, the pinnate leaves emerge a brilliant, glowing golden-yellow, which slowly matures to a refreshing lime-green by summer, before turning yellow again in autumn. Because the foliage consists of many tiny leaflets, it casts a soft, dappled shade rather than deep shadow, allowing lawn or other plants to grow comfortably beneath it. This cultivar is thornless and rarely produces the long seed pods associated with the species, making it a 'cleaner' choice for paved areas or patios. It has a broad, spreading habit and is quite fast-growing when young. Fully hardy to H6, it is also notably tolerant of urban pollution and drought once established. For the best golden colour, it should be planted in a sunny position sheltered from cold, drying winds. It performs well in any reasonably fertile, well-drained soil.
