Water Avens 'Leonard's Variety' 'Leonards Variety'

'Leonard's Variety' is an improved cultivar of the native Water Avens, perfectly suited for the damp margins of ponds and bog gardens. It is a clump-forming perennial with attractive, hairy, dark green foliage. In late spring and early summer, it produces nodding, bell-shaped flowers on dark, wiry stems. The flowers are a lovely shade of dusky coppery-pink or orange-rose, with darker purple-toned calathes. These are followed by decorative, feathery seed heads that persist for several weeks. It typically grows to a height of 40-50cm. It is extremely hardy (H7) and very reliable, performing best in soil that never dries out. It is equally happy in sun or partial shade. Its subtle, sophisticated colouring and natural habit make it an excellent choice for a 'wilder' looking pond edge or a damp woodland garden. It is also highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Moist to boggy soil.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.

Flowering: May, Jun, Jul.
