Spring Gentian
The Spring Gentian is one of the most iconic and sought-after alpine plants for the British rock garden. It forms low-growing, neat carpets of small, elliptic, bright green leaves that remain evergreen. In mid to late spring, it produces intensely vivid, deep blue, star-shaped flowers with a white throat that are unparalleled in their brilliance. This species is native to the upper reaches of the Pennines in the UK, making it well-suited to our climate, provided its specific needs are met. It requires a position in full sun but must have a cool, moist root run, often achieved by planting next to a large stone or using a gritty compost enriched with organic matter. Perfect for a scree bed or a dedicated alpine trough, it is fully hardy but sensitive to prolonged summer drought. Regular top-dressing with fine grit helps maintain the health of the foliage and prevents rot.
