Great Ox-tongue
Gasteria disticha is a sturdy and attractive succulent that is well-suited to the UK home environment. It forms rosettes of thick, strap-shaped, dark green leaves that are arranged in two opposing ranks (distichous) when young, though they may spiral as the plant matures. The leaves are covered in small, white, raised tubercles, giving them a rough, tongue-like texture. This species is relatively shade-tolerant compared to many other succulents, making it an excellent choice for bright rooms that do not receive direct, scorching sunlight. In spring and early summer, it produces arching flower spikes with distinctive stomach-shaped, coral-pink and green flowers. It is rated H2, needing protection from frost. It is a slow-growing, long-lived plant that prefers a well-drained potting mix and moderate watering during the growing season. Gasterias are generally very resilient and less prone to pests than some other succulents, making them ideal for beginners.
