Summer Hyacinth

Galtonia candicans, the Summer Hyacinth, is an elegant tuberous perennial that brings architectural interest and late-season beauty to UK gardens. It produces tall, erect flower spikes, often reaching over a metre, adorned with numerous drooping, bell-shaped white flowers. These blooms emit a subtle fragrance, adding to their appeal. The strap-like, grey-green leaves form an attractive basal clump. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for the back of borders, cottage gardens, or as a focal point. While hardy in many parts of the UK, a winter mulch in colder regions is beneficial. It provides a stately presence and a welcome vertical accent, extending the flowering season into late summer.
