Ornamental Strawberry 'Lipstick'

'Lipstick' is a vigorous, mat-forming perennial that combines the utility of a ground cover with the beauty of vibrant flowers. It spreads rapidly via runners (stolons), creating a dense carpet of glossy, dark green, trifoliate leaves that suppress weeds effectively. Throughout the summer, it produces a profusion of eye-catching, deep rose-red or magenta flowers with bright yellow centres—a much more intense colour than traditional strawberry blossoms. These are occasionally followed by small, red, edible fruits, although they are not as flavorful as garden strawberries. This plant is ideal for banks, slopes, or as an edging for borders where it can be allowed to roam. It is fully hardy (H6) and thrives in full sun or partial shade in any reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. In autumn, the foliage often takes on attractive reddish hues. It is a low-maintenance choice that provides a long season of interest and is excellent for attracting pollinators to the garden.
