Giant Fescue

Festuca gigantea, commonly known as Giant Fescue, is a robust and less common fescue found in UK woodlands and grasslands, offering a more vigorous and substantial presence than its ornamental cousins. Unlike the 'blue' fescues, this species has broad, bright green leaves, forming a lush, upright clump. In summer, tall, arching stems rise dramatically, bearing graceful, open panicles of greenish-brown spikelets which lend a natural, airy quality to the plant. It's a cool-season grass that thrives in partial shade and moist, well-drained soil, making it suitable for woodland edges, naturalistic planting schemes, or in larger borders where its elegant stature can be appreciated. It self-seeds gently, contributing to a naturalised look.
