Robust Bamboo 'Zebra'

Fargesia robusta 'Zebra' is a striking and highly desirable clumping bamboo that earns its name from the dramatic contrast between its dark green culms and the persistent, papery white culm sheaths. This 'checkerboard' effect is most prominent in the spring and summer as new canes emerge. 'Zebra' is one of the most upright and tall Fargesia, reaching up to 4 or 5 metres, making it an exceptional choice for a tall, narrow, non-invasive screen. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and do not curl in the sun, which is a significant advantage over other Fargesia species. It is very hardy (H5) and can tolerate more sun than the Umbrella Bamboo (F. murielae). It is a reliable performer in the UK, thriving in most fertile soils as long as they are kept moist. Because it is clumping, it is perfect for modern urban gardens where space is at a premium and a root barrier is not desired. It provides an instant, sophisticated vertical element.
