Bamboo 'Wolong'
The 'Wolong' cultivar of Fargesia robusta is known for having significantly larger leaves than the standard species, giving it a much more 'tropical' and lush appearance. It is a vigorous, non-invasive clumping bamboo that forms a tall, upright screen very quickly. One of its most attractive features is the contrast between the dark green culms and the persistent creamy-white culm sheaths, which create a attractive 'checkered' or 'zebra' effect during the growing season. It is one of the first bamboos to shoot in the spring. Highly well-suited to the UK climate, it is hardy (H5) and unusually tolerant of both sunny and shady sites. It also handles wind better than many other Fargesia species. It prefers fertile, moist soil and is an ideal choice for a dense, evergreen privacy screen that won't take over the garden.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
