Bamboo 'Formidable'

As the name suggest, 'Formidable' is a robust, clumping bamboo known for its vigour and upright growth. It is particularly valued in the UK for its early shooting season, often producing new culms in late winter or very early spring. The culms are dark green and are initially covered by striking white sheaths, creating a 'checkerboard' effect of green and white along the stem. It does not run, making it an ideal choice for a tall, narrow screen or hedge reaching up to 4 metres. The leaves are a deep, glossy green and, unlike many other Fargesia species, they do not curl significantly in sun or frost. It is fully hardy to H5 and adapts well to both sun and shade, though it maintains a tighter form in brighter light. It requires a moist, fertile soil and protection from the harshest drying winds to keep the foliage pristine.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
