Bamboo 'Volcano'

Fargesia nitida 'Volcano' is a stunning, non-invasive clumping bamboo part of the newer generation of seedlings grown in the UK. It is named for the dramatic colour of its young culms, which emerge in shades of reddish-purple and darken to a deep smoky-purple, almost black, as they age. This creates a wonderful contrast with the small, neat, bright green leaves. The habit is upright when young, becoming beautifully arching and fountain-like as it matures. It is extremely hardy (H6) and is one of the best bamboos for cold, northern gardens. Unlike many other bamboos, it thrives in semi-shade and its leaves do not curl in the sun as easily as some other Fargesia nitida varieties. It prefers cool, moist, well-drained soil. It makes a perfect specimen for a small garden or can be planted in a row to create a soft, swaying hedge that requires minimal maintenance.

Sun: Partial shade.

Soil: Moist but well-drained, fertile soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
