Bamboo 'Black Pearl'
Part of the new generation of Fargesia nitida seedlings, 'Black Pearl' is one of the most stunning clumping bamboos for the UK. As the name suggests, its stems turn a deep, dark purple—almost black—as they mature, providing a wonderful contrast with the small, vibrant green leaves. It has an upright but slightly arching habit, growing to approximately 3 metres. Because it is non-invasive and doesn't grow too tall, it is a perfect choice for small to medium gardens. It is extremely hardy (H6) but, like its parent species, it prefers a spot with partial shade; the leaves may curl in extreme midday sun to protect themselves from water loss. It looks fantastic in a contemporary garden or as part of a woodland planting scheme. It is slow-growing and well-behaved, requiring very little maintenance other than regular watering during its first few seasons.
Sun: Partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained soil.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
