Bamboo 'Winter Joy'

A modern hybrid (likely nitida x murielae) that has been specifically selected for its excellent garden performance in Europe. 'Winter Joy' is a clumping, non-invasive bamboo that combines the best traits of its parents: the dark, attractive canes and the robust, healthy foliage of the newer generations. It grows very upright to about 3-4 metres. A particular advantage for UK gardeners is that it is less prone to leaf curling in winter than some of the older murielae cultivars, staying 'joyfully' green throughout the coldest months. It is exceptionally hardy (H6). Its dense, fountain-shaped habit makes it a superior choice for a medium-to-tall privacy screen or an elegant standalone specimen. It flourishes in partial shade but can adapt to sunnier spots if the soil remains consistently moist. Very low maintenance and reliable.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Moist but well-drained, fertile loam.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
