Little Red Rooster Bamboo 'Xian II'
Fargesia denudata 'Xian II' (often sold under the trade name 'Little Red Rooster') is an exceptionally graceful clumping bamboo. It is distinguished by its shorter stature and very fine, delicate, light-green leaves that hang in soft, cloud-like tiers. The culms are initially yellowish-green and arch elegantly under the weight of the foliage, creating a beautiful fountain shape. It is a very slow-growing and non-invasive species, making it perfect for small gardens or as a specimen in a mixed border. It is fully hardy (H5) but is one of the most shade-tolerant bamboos, making it ideal for those difficult north-facing spots. It requires moist, well-drained soil and will not tolerate drought well. Its soft, refined texture provides a wonderful contrast to coarser-leaved plants like Rodgersia or Hostas. It is often cited by bamboo enthusiasts as one of the most beautiful and well-behaved bamboos available to UK gardeners.
