Russian Vine

Often known as 'Mile-a-Minute' vine, Fallopia baldschuanica is perhaps the fastest-growing climber available in the UK. It is a deciduous, woody vine that can grow several metres in a single season, making it ideal for quickly screening large, unsightly buildings or covering high, sturdy fences. In late summer and autumn, it is almost completely covered in a frothy veil of tiny, fragrant white or pale pink flowers, which are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Because of its extreme vigour, it is not suitable for small gardens or near house gutters and roof tiles, as it can be invasive and difficult to control once established. It is exceptionally hardy and will grow in almost any soil or situation, including very exposed or polluted urban sites. It can be pruned hard in late winter to keep it within bounds, but it will quickly regrow. Only for the largest of spaces.
