Nice Spurge
Euphorbia nicaeensis is a sophisticated choice for a sunny, well-drained garden, particularly one with a Mediterranean or gravel theme. This perennial is prized for its glaucous, blue-grey foliage that remains attractive year-round in milder UK climates. The leaves are narrow and arranged spirally around semi-evergreen stems. In early to mid-summer, it produces large, flattened heads of chartreuse-yellow flowers (cyathia) that contrast beautifully with the cool tones of the foliage. It typically grows to a height and spread of about 50-60cm, forming a rounded, architectural clump. It is hardy to H4/H5, meaning it survives most UK winters if given excellent drainage; it will not tolerate winter wet. Like all Euphorbias, the milky sap is toxic and can cause skin and eye irritation, so gloves should always be worn when pruning. It is very drought-tolerant once established and thrives in poor soils. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only the removal of spent flowering stems at the base in late summer to tidy the plant.
