Escallonia 'Macrantha'

Escallonia macrantha is a vigorous, evergreen shrub highly valued for hedging in coastal and milder UK gardens. It forms a dense, robust screen of dark green, glossy, leathery leaves. In summer, it produces an abundance of rich, rosy-carmine, bell-shaped flowers, creating a vibrant display. With an ultimate height and spread of 2.5-4m, it can be maintained as a hedge from 1.5-3m through regular pruning. It is particularly tolerant of salt-laden winds and prefers a sheltered, sunny position with well-drained soil. While hardy in many areas, it may require protection in colder inland regions. A beautiful, free-flowering hedging option with an RHS AGM.
