EscalloniaBase 'Donard Radiance'
'Donard Radiance' is a standout evergreen shrub for hedging, particularly favoured in coastal and southern UK gardens. It features relatively large, glossy, dark green leaves that provide an attractive year-round screen. In early to mid-summer, it is covered in a spectacular display of chalice-shaped, rose-red flowers that stand out brilliantly against the foliage and are highly attractive to bees. It has a vigorous, upright habit and can quickly form a substantial hedge. While it is excellent at withstanding salt-laden winds, it can be susceptible to damage from very hard inland frosts and cold, drying winds, so a somewhat sheltered position is ideal in colder regions. It thrives in most well-drained soils and blooms most profusely in full sun. Regular pruning after flowering will help maintain a dense, bushy form. It adds a wonderful splash of Mediterranean-style colour and texture to the garden boundary.
