Mediterranean Sea Holly 'Picos Amethyst'

'Picos Amethyst' is an outstanding selection of the Spanish Sea Holly, prized for its intense colour and striking architectural form. This perennial produces deeply lobed, leathery leaves that are dark green with conspicuous silvery-white veins and a prickly margin. In mid to late summer, it produces multiple branched stems topped with cone-like flower heads surrounded by large, spiky, amethyst-blue bracts. The entire upper part of the plant, including the stems, turns a vibrant blue-violet. It is extremely hardy (H5) and thrives in the UK in full sun and well-drained soil. It is particularly effective in gravel gardens or mixed borders, where its metallic sheen provides a modern, sculptural look. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and a favourite of bees. The flower heads remain attractive long after they have faded, providing interest well into the winter. It does not like to be moved once established due to its long taproot.
