Alpine Sea Holly

A stunning alpine perennial prized for its architectural, thistle-like blue flowers, Alpine Sea Holly is a captivating addition to any UK rock garden or border. It forms a rosette of spiny, heart-shaped basal leaves, from which emerge tall, branched stems bearing intense metallic-blue flowerheads surrounded by prominent, spiny silver bracts. These striking blooms appear in mid to late summer, offering excellent seasonal interest. Eryngium alpinum thrives in full sun and well-drained, gritty soil, preferring neutral to alkaline conditions. It is particularly drought-tolerant once established and its unique texture and colour make it an exceptional plant for attracting pollinators. Known for its robust nature, it is generally hardy across most of the UK, suitable for H5-H6 regions, and its dried flowerheads can provide winter interest.
