Macradenum Stork's-bill

A refined and long-flowering alpine from the Pyrenees, Erodium glandulosum is a compact, clump-forming perennial that is a favorite in UK rock gardens. It features attractive, finely divided, fern-like foliage that is often slightly aromatic and grey-green in hue. From late spring right through until early autumn, it produces a constant succession of five-petalled flowers. The flowers are pale lilac or white with dramatic, deep purple-black blotches on the upper two petals and intricate veining, giving them a very sophisticated appearance. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and thrives in a position of full sun with very well-drained soil. Reaching only about 10-15cm in height, it is perfect for troughs, scree beds, or the top of a dry stone wall. It is fully hardy (H4) but must be protected from winter wetness, which can cause the woody crown to rot. It is one of the most reliable alpines for providing a long season of interest in a small space.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Sharply drained, gritty, neutral to alkaline soil.
