Winter Aconite
Eranthis cilicica, a charming harbinger of spring, unfurls its bright yellow, buttercup-like flowers from late winter to early spring, often pushing through snow-covered ground. These delightful, low-growing bulbs form a carpet of colour beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, naturalising readily to create a stunning display year after year. Each flower is framed by a frilly collar of leafy bracts, adding to its appeal. Ideal for woodland gardens, rockeries, or containers, 'Eranthis cilicica' thrives in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It prefers a position in partial shade, mimicking its natural woodland habitat, where it can capture early spring sunshine before the tree canopy leafs out. A hardy perennial, it requires minimal care once established and is a valuable early nectar source for emerging pollinators. They are distinct from the common Eranthis hyemalis.
