Purple Love Grass f. spectabilis

This North American native is a show-stopper in late summer when it produces a low-lying, airy cloud of reddish-purple flowers that seem to float just above the foliage. The effect is so fine and misty that it is often likened to a purple haze. As the season progresses, the flower heads often detach and tumble like tumbleweeds, dispersing seeds. The foliage is a simple, coarse green that turns bronze-red in autumn. This grass is relatively short-statured, making it ideal for the front of a sunny, well-drained border or a gravel garden. It is very drought-tolerant and thrives in poor, sandy soils. While hardy to H5, it requires excellent drainage to survive wet UK winters. It is a warm-season grass, so it only begins to grow late in the spring. Cut back the old foliage in early spring before new growth appears. Perfect for creating a soft, romantic look.
