Bottlebrush Grass
Elymus hystrix, commonly known as bottlebrush grass, is a distinctive native perennial grass that offers unique textural interest and a relaxed, informal charm to the UK garden. It forms loose clumps of broad, flat, green leaves and is most notable for its flower spikes, which strongly resemble bottlebrushes. These fascinating seed heads emerge in summer, green at first, then maturing to a straw colour, and are held horizontally or slightly nodding. They persist well into autumn and winter, providing excellent architectural interest, especially when caught by frost. It thrives in partial shade to full shade and moist, well-drained soil, making it excellent for woodland edges or naturalistic plantings. Fully hardy and easy to grow.
