Elaeagnus umbellata
Elaeagnus umbellata is a vigorous, deciduous shrub or small tree, reaching 3-5m in height and spread. It produces abundant small, red, tart, edible fruits (often speckled) in autumn, which can be eaten fresh or made into preserves. This plant is incredibly tough and hardy (H6), tolerant of poor soils, drought, and exposure, and thrives in full sun. Its small, fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers appear in May, attracting pollinators. It is a nitrogen-fixer, improving soil fertility, and its dense growth provides good shelter and food for wildlife.
