Silverberry

Elaeagnus ebbingei is a robust and highly versatile evergreen shrub, forming an excellent, dense hedge, especially for challenging conditions in UK gardens. Its leathery, dark green leaves have a distinctive silvery-scaly underside, giving a unique shimmer. Extremely tolerant of coastal exposure, wind, and dry shade, it thrives where many others struggle. Left untrimmed, it can reach an ultimate height and spread of 3-4m, but it clips well into a formal or informal hedge of 1.5-3m. Small, fragrant, bell-shaped flowers appear inconspicuously in autumn, followed by orange-red fruits in spring. An invaluable, tough, and reliable hedging plant with an RHS AGM.
